Special activities in Cupertino

The Cupertino Library Foundation is sponsoring two special contests in conjunction with Silicon Valley Reads 2011. An essay contest for teens and adults who live or work in Cupertino asks participants to write up to 500 words on how the themes of The Year of Fog deal with discouragement, human frailties and the power of perseverance, hope, faith and love. Deadline is Jan. 26. Two Grand Prize winners (one teen and one adult) will each receive $500. Two second place winners (one teen and one adult) will be awarded $300 each.

The “Light & Shadow” Holga Photo Contest is open to anyone who lives in Santa Clara County. Participants may check out a Holga camera from the Cupertino Library (Santa Clara County Library card required) and use it to create photos inspired by The Year of Fog. Four winners (two teens and two adults) will each win $100.

Winners of both contests will be announced on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2-4 p.m. at the Cupertino Community Hall with author Michelle Richmond.

Photo Exhibit: Lost and Found Have you ever experienced the joy of finding something important that you thought you had lost? Or the thrill of discovering a treasure that has been sitting all along just under your nose? We all have taken something for granted until it is gone. Too often we may fail to notice the mystery of the people and things in our daily lives because we see them everyday.

Venture into your own community or in your own backyard and look for something of value that you may have overlooked. Take a photograph of a person, a place, or idea that you rediscover in your community or in your life. Write a caption of no more than 250 words explaining what this photograph means to you. Entries will be accepted Feb. 1-March 5. An exhibition of the photos will be at the Gilroy Library during April 2011.

For details and an application, visit http://www.santaclaracountylib.org/gilroy/, emailsnapshot@library.sccgov.org or call (408) 842-8207.

In addition to the Year of Fog events, there will be a series of special events for children and families based on child safety, as well as on the 2011 Silicon Valley Reads companion books, Kathryn Otoshi’s ONE and Wyatt Key’s Alabama Moon. See below.
