mama smarts

January 3rd, 2006 by Michelle

Andi Buchanan, managing editor of the hip online mama mag Literary Mama, has a new book out, Literary Mama: Reading for the Maternally Inclined, which she co-edited with Amy Hudock (Seal Press, Jan. 2006). This compendium of work gleaned from the magazine features well-known and beginning writers tackling motherhood from many different angles, from adoption and miscarriage to gender identity and generational rifts. Read the introduction here.

I’m particularly pleased to blog about this offering from a member of the Girlfriends’ Cyber Circuit, as I’m a big fan of Literary Mama. Disclaimer: they recently ran a story of mine, The Hero of Queens Boulevard, which had originally been published in Glimmer Train.

About Literary Mama, the magazine:
launch: Nov. 2003
unique visitors: 35,000 per month
hits: half a million per month
honors: 2005 Forbes Best of the Web pick; Writer’s Digest 101 Best Websites for Writers
mssion: to publish work that is “too long, too complex, too ambiguous, too irreverent, too ironic, and too body conscious for other publications”

Buchanan’s other books include the anthology It’s a Boy: Women Writers on Raising Sons (Seal Press 2005), and the memoir Mother Shock: Loving Every (Other) Minute of It (Seal Press 2003). She also publishes the blog Mothershock. And for those readers who enjoying prying into the personal, you can read Andi’s “boyfriend list” on E. Lockhart’s blog.
