A sharply divided House voted Friday to order President Bush to bring combat troops home from Iraq next year, a victory for Democrats in an epic war-powers struggle and Congress’ boldest challenge yet to the administration’s policy. Ignoring a White House veto threat, lawmakers voted 218-212, mostly along party lines, for a binding war spending bill requiring that combat operations cease before September 2008, or earlier if the Iraqi government does not meet certain requirements.

It’s about time we pulled out of Iraq. But the mess we’ve made there is going to have repercussions for decades to come. While I very much want our troops to come home, I also believe strongly that we have created a Middle East that is far more unstable than it was before we invaded Iraq. A pull-out isn’t a viable answer, considering the state of unrest in Iraq right now and the fact that civilians die by the hundreds each week due to civil warfare and lack of security. But then, there really is no viable answer. Our occupation of Iraq is a wrong that, in my opinion, can’t be righted. A pull-out may be the lesser of many evils. No matter what we do, we screwed, and so is Iraq. Because of Bush’s bullheadedness and stupidity in the matter of Iraq, we don’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to the issue of Iran. Or North Korea. I truly believe that George W. Bush’s disastrous presidency has marked the beginning of the end of U.S. supremacy.
