tonight in retro-land

April 28th, 2007 by Michelle

Nice review today in The Examiner. Plus:

Join me and Sheri Joseph, author of STRAY (and a dead ringer for Edna St. Vincent Millay) tonight at Bookshop West Portal, Neil Sofman’s excellent little bookstore in the deliciously retro neighborhood of West Portal. You might want to catch dinner before the reading at any number of great eateries: Fuji, Roti, El Toreador, Xiao Loong, Fresca, Fuji, Bursa, Spiazzo–and drinks afterward at Portal’s Tavern or Philosophers’ Club.

Oh my gosh, when I was a little girl my sister would walk to West Portal just to buy a pickel. Well, that and visit Toy Village, the best toy store in the free world.

I have many memories of West Portal, many involving a family who was far more glamorous than the Schneiders could ever be.

Karen, I love it! Toy Village isn’t there anymore, is it? Was that possibly the name of the Victorian toy shop where Bookshop West Portal is now located?

    Who was the glamorous family?
