Wendy Tokunaga will read from her delightful new novel, Midori by Moonlight, tonight at Cody’s Books in Berkeley, 7:00 p.m. Tomorrow night, Elline Lipkin read from her well-received poetry collection, The Errant Thread, in The Gathering Place reading series in Half Moon Bay. Reservations required–this is actually an alert for Bay Area folks who are already familiar with the venue, as it has no web site and is located in a private home. She’ll also be reading at San Jose State on November 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Got a toy? It’s probably been recalled!

I set my son’s Thomas the Tank bucket, in which he keeps all his Thomas trains, down by the computer today when I went online to make sure I hadn’t missed any. I found this pretty comprehensive list of recalls at the Consumer Protection website, and discovered that, while the trains we still have are supposedly all right, the bucket itself has been recalled! As I scrolled through the list, I also discovered that several other of my son’s toys had been recalled due to lead paint: a Geotrax car, a wooden puzzle, a trowel, a flashlight, a toy...

Tin House “Off the Grid” Theme Issue

The deadline for submissions to Tin House’s Spring 2008 “Off the Grid” issue is November 1. We’re looking for fiction, poetry, and nonfiction by or about people or institutions that function (or don’t function) out of the bounds of “normal” society. For the “Lost & Found” section we are looking for brief appreciations of texts written outside of conventional publishing–prison, exile, mental institutions, in secret.
