just calm down…

January 15th, 2008 by Michelle

After listening to this podcast of Kulbir Dhaliwal on call with 911 in the immediate aftermath of the December 25 tiger attack at San Francisco Zoo, you’ll hope you never have a need to call for emergency services in San Francisco. While the kid’s brother is bleeding, and the tiger is on the scene, the 911 operator keeps telling the desperate caller that the paramedics are at the zoo gate, but can’t get in to the zoo because it might be dangerous for them to go in. In a voice that sounds just like Catherine Keener, she keeps telling him to “calm down, just calm down” while, for all he knows, his brother is bleeding to death. The 911 operator sounds rather irritated with Dhaliwal, even as he’s complaining that the person who works at the zoo cafe won’t bring him towels to soak up his brother’s blood. At one point, he says, “It should NOT take this long to get an ambulance out here,” and he laughs in exasperation. Whatever you thought about the zoo tragedy before, this audio will make you understand any kind of lawsuit the Dhaliwals and the family of Carlos Sousa Jr. might bring against the zoo and the city.
