get your airstream on

Check out the fabulous new blog Real Americana, wherein David Wolking waxes poetic on everything from roadside carnivals (courtesy of the Electric Lion’s Club), to Mama Sim’s waffles, and Hormel’s Mary Kitchen Corned Beef Hash in a can. David and Misty (she’s my sister, and yes, that’s her real name, and yes, you wish you knew her) like food, and there’s a lot of it on this blog. There are also some savory characters, good pictures, and jazzy prose. For those who road trip and those who only think about it, here’s a taste:

Sweet Mary. We rolled out 6 deep to Sacramento looking for trouble and what did we find? A cinderblock shop building with a double steel door guarded by an armed mercenary and people exiting by the droves with brown paper sacks. Charlie was baffled. He kept asking what we thought was going on in there and all we could come up with was weed…

There was a lot next door, chainlinked 14 feet high with razor wire. Inside was a gravel-paved vacancy of weeds and a transmitter, and chickens. A chicken concentration camp…Across the street was a body shop, and I watched a pimped-out purple pickup haul a purple single prop plane out of the depths of hell. It parked on the curb, a Honda civic roared out, then purple pulled right back inside and the steel roll-down door fell shut.

It all sounded like loads of fun, but I didn’t get jealous until I got to the part where they got to Mama Sim’s, and “Misty had a pork chop, grits, and some sides.”

Eat your waffles, people. And read Real Americana. There’s more where that came from.
