The Sorrows of an American

The Sorrows of an American

I just finished read Siri Hudsvedt’s second novel, The Sorrows of an American. A really lovely, melancholy, contemplative novel. It took me almost a week to read this book, because it’s a slow-burn book, the kind that requires one’s full concentration at every moment. The narrator, a psychiatrist, reminds me of Lars Gustafsson’s intellectual, solitary characters. Click BOOKNOTES in the sidebar to read all of my book reviews on this blog.

Social Network Free Day: An Experiment in Cyber-Dieting

February 19, 2009
By

The talented and wonderful Misty Richmond (she’s my sister, but I’d say that even if she weren’t), will be exhibiting her work along with other photographers tonight at the first-ever Fotovisiion SlideSlam in Berkeley. Each photograher will take a few minutes to talk about his or her project, and photos will be displayed in a slideshow on a big screen. Better than a movie, free, and you don’t have to buy the popcorn! (Local businesses provide food and drinks.) Where: 2105 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Berkeley, CA 94704 When: Thursday, Feb 19, 7:00 p.m. Details at Fotovision

February 13, 2009
By

A few days ago, a reader named Christine emailed me the following question: Do you think a person can begin being a writer at age 60? You’re so young and have such a solid educational background in literature. I know I want to write, and have a folder of snippets, unrelated, but think I’m crazy to start at this age! Well, I should admit, first off, that I’m not really that young. I grew up in the South, where a lady is never supposed to reveal her age, but since the publisher of my first novel decided to put...
