The Wild Things Are a Lot Like Us

October 30, 2009

My husband and I took our son, who will soon turn five, to see WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE last weekend. I figured that my son needed an antidote to his most recent movie experience– Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs–which was so inane and loud and transparently moralistic as to be inappropriate for viewers of any age. While Wild Things had the potential to be scary, I also knew that, between Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers, it would at least be interesting. Afterward, we had the following conversation: Me: What did you think of the movie? Oscar: Good...

Great gifts for preschoolers

Time to start thinking about what will go under the Christmas tree. I’ve already ordered these: The Little Prince pop-up book, and Hi-Ho Cherry-O. The Little Prince is one of my favorite all-time stories; I already read it to my four-year-old, and he loved it. I think the pop-up edition will be even more magical. Which means that authors, like musicians, will have no way to protect their intellectual property from being distributed ad infinitum, without compensation. It’s one thing to lend a book to a...

If You Follow Me

I ran into Malena Watrous and her husband outside the Litquake party at Elbo Room in San Francisco Saturday night. Malena mentioned that she was working on her website–which reminded me that she has a book coming out next spring. Malena’s debut novel, If You Follow Me, is set in Japan. Thisbe Nissen calls it “the kind of book you finish and then clutch to your heart as you run around telling everyone you know that they have to read it.” Don’t you love the cover? Read more about the book, or be cooler than all your friends and...
