5 Great Fitness Apps for Women

You don’t need a gym membership to look great and feel fabulous. Over the past few months, I’ve been test driving fitness apps for the iPhone and narrowed it down to my favorites: the ones that were easy to stick with, most user-friendly, and most helpful in meeting my fitness goals.

Yes, yes, it’s all about the fitness, not about how you look in your birthday suit. BUT, if you miss the days when you always left the light on, Look Better Naked might help you regain your confidence. Adapted from the book of the same name by Women’s Health editor-in-chief Michele Promaulayko, Look Better Naked features a customizable diet and workout plan, a calendar that syncs with iCal, and helpful reminders.

If the thought of running makes you cringe but the thought of power-walking makes you embarrassed, Ease into 5K will help get you moving. When I started, I didn’t think there was any chance I’d actually be running for five minutes, much less half an hour, but halfway into the program, I’m running 15 minutes at a spurt (walking the other fifteen, but I’m getting there!)This nifty app tells you when to walk and when to run during a 30-minute regimen, so that you build up from running just five minutes to running for the entire time. You can even load you own music and set it to play during running or walking intervals.

Deepak Chopra and Tara Stiles teamed up to create Authentic Yoga, an informative app that “includes poses and routines for developing strength, balance, and flexibility. Choose between instructional lessons, individual poses, or special routines.” You can also cobble the poses together to create your own custom routine. Think of it as a little yoga teacher in your pocket. Also available for iPad, Authentic Yoga is a great companion to keep up with downward facing dog while on the road.

You know you ate that! By now you probably know that the best way to banish “invisible” calories (the ones you eat while standing over the sink, or the ones you scrape off your kids’ plate) is to record what you eat. Calorie Tracker by Livestrong makes it easy. Loaded with thousands of foods, broken down by brand to make it easier, Livestrong helps you keep track of what you eat. You can set calorie goals, see how many calories you have left, and see the nutritional breakdown of your day–how much you consume in protein, carbs, fat, etc. I’ve tried several calorie apps but this is by far the most comprehensive. You can enter your latte from Peet’s, your salad from Chipotle, your beef brisket from Trader Joe’s–oodles of chain stores and brands are represented here, so you don’t have to guess how many calories were in the serving. Warning: sometimes you’ll discover things you really didn’t want to know. Like that “healthy” plain tart frozen yogurt from Yogurtland? 19 grams of sugar per serving!

A little picture goes a long way. That’s the rationale behind the ingenious Bodyshot Weight & BMI tracker app. Snap a photo with your cell phone on the day you start your fitness/weight loss regimen. Add your body measurements and weight, and let BodyShots estimate your BMI. The next week, snap another photo, with more measurements. Proceed. You can compare photos and measurements from any date and watch your svelte new figure emerging in an extraordinarily motivational before-and-after progression. Share your before and after pics on twitter or Facebook to get extra pats on your incredibly shrinking bum from your pals. Nothing makes weight loss more fun than visual evidence that you are getting hotter by the week.

Drink your greens: Amazing Grass Green Superfood

Yes, it is weird to drink your greens. I totally agree. And yet, I’m a sucker for this Chocolate Green Superfood drink mix by San Francisco based company Amazing Grass. I mix it with a banana and some frozen blueberries in the morning, and it’s yummy, and I swear it gives me energy. Also really good for your skin–gives you that nice afterglow look. Seriously.
