Author Bio
Michelle Richmond is the author of four novels and two award-winning story collections. Her 2007 novel, the New York Times bestseller The Year of Fog, has been published in ten languages. It was named one of the best books of the year by Library Journal and News of the World, and Le Figaro declared the bestselling French translation, L’annee brouillard, one of “the great successes of the summer.” Her 2008 novel, No One You Know, was described by Booklist in a starred review as “a thoroughly riveting literary thriller.” The Guardian (London) dubbed Richmond “mistress of the kind of literary mystery that packs the punch of a fine thriller, but with added insight and wisdom.” Her new novel, Golden State (Feb. 2014), received starred reviews from Booklist and Library Journal, which called it “gripping, multi-layered, must-read fiction.”
Michelle grew up on Alabama’s Gulf Coast and has made her home since 1999 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her fiction frequently references this cultural divide, with characters from the deep South struggling to come to terms with their altered identities on the West Coast and elsewhere.” [Michelle’s books] are all set in California but she’s from the Gulf Coast, and her books have a very Southern sensibility,” says Joshilyn Jackson (Backseat Saints, A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty) in this interview with Southern Spines. “I think of her as a Southern writer…she’s writing expatriate fiction.”
Richmond is the recipient of the Catherine Doctorow Innovative Fiction Prize, the Hillsdale Award for Fiction from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, the Mississippi Review Fiction Prize, and the Associated Writing Programs Award. She holds an MFA from the University of Miami, where she was a James Michener Fellow, and a BA from the University of Alabama.
Her work has appeared in many magazines and anthologies, including Glimmer Train, Oxford American, The Guardian, The Believer, Coastal Living, San Francisco Magazine, The Kenyon Review, The Missouri Review, Playboy, Salon, and Best American Fantasy, among others. She is an avid traveler and has written about Iceland, Argentina, Uruguay, China, Hungary, and other countries for 7×7, Lonely Planet, Travelers Tales, and The Telegraph.
Richmond has taught in the MFA programs in creative writing at California College of the Arts and the University of San Francisco, and served as Distinguished Visiting Writer at St. Mary’s College of Moraga and Bowling Green State University. She recently held the Catherine Julie Cunningham Chair at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California. Since 2010, she has served on the board of the Authors Guild.
She lives with her husband and son in Northern California.
