songs of the season

So I finally got around to watching I Gotta a Crush on Obama, wherein a voluptuous young woman who calls herself Obama Girl prances about in short-shorts singing about her thing for “B.” It’s hilarious and actually kind of on point. I may have muddled a couple of words here, but here’s a sample from the lyrics: “You seemed to float onto the floor/Democratic convention 2004/So I put down my Kerry sign/Knew I had to make you mine/I cannot wait til two thousand and eight/Baby you’re the best candidate/You’re into border security/let’s break the border between you and me/universal health care reform/the thought of it makes me warm/You tell the truth unlike the right/You love but you can’t fight…B to the O to the L to the A.” This video could do more to “rock the vote” than the MTV machine ever did. But if T&A in the service of democracy isn’t your thing, you can go on the campaign trail with Obama on his campaign’s official blog.

Meanwhile, Hillary makes what may be her first major campagin error by allowing the public to vote on her campaign song. How could she have know they would choose “You and I” by Celine Dion? Although the song’s a dud, there’s a funny video, which spoofs the final episode of the Sopranos, on Hillary’s web site in which she and Bill sit in a diner chatting about the campaign song while Hillary flips through the songs on the tabletop jukebox. Bill votes for Smashmouth. In the background, Journey belts out “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Meanwhile, Chelsea dents up the car while trying to parallel park in front of the diner. Vince Curatola, aka Johnny “Sack” Sacramoni, makes a cameo.

Paying tribute to the pop culture iconography of The Sopranos is a smart move, and not Hillary’s first trip down this cinematic road. At the Bill Clinton Library in Little Rock, I watched a lengthy and rather amusing video of Hillary-as-Forest Gump, in which the former First Lady sits on a park bench talking to incredulous passersby about her role in major historical events.

The nerdiness of Hillary’s campaign video actually makes you want to give both of the Clintons a big hug–kind of like if you saw your parents trying to bust a move at the club.
