Ted Haggard, one of the frontline faces of American evangelism and the president of the 30-million memberNational Association of Evangelicals, who also happens to have tiesto the White House, has stepped down from his position as pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs after a male prostitute alleged that Haggard’s been paying him for sex for three years. Not surprisingly, Haggard is an outspoken opponent of gay rights.
His website includes a bullted list of his beliefs, including this one about, you know, the place you don’t wanna go:
Hell: After living one life on earth, the unbelievers will be judged by God and sent to hell where they will be eternally tormented with the devil and the fallen angels.
He’s also the author of a diet book. It’s called The Jerusalem Diet, and the premise is that “the human body is beautifully and wonderfully designed to live on a wide variety of foods.” Well, now, isn’t that brilliant?
And the evangelicals wonder why folks think they have a few screws loose.
The exercise:
Write about getting caught.
