in praise of the novel

Read Carlos Fuentes’s opening address from the International Literature Festival in Berlin here. In the address, entitled “In Praise of the Novel,” Fuentes attempts, among other things, to differentiate between what makes a long-seller (Faulkner, Garcia Marquez, Dostoevsky, Cervantes), and what makes a best-seller. Jay McInerney can also be found defending the fiction long form in the Guardian.
