Via Huffington Post, Sarah Palin is convinced it’s “God’s will” to develop the Alaska oil pipeline. Scroll down to watch her bizarre address to the Church of God congregation in her hometown, in which she urges the good people of Alaska to pray for the $30 billion pipeline. Palin is so radically to the right that she campaigned for governor on a platform of drilling in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge–a position which even McCain opposes. (When asked in an interview what she thought of his position, Palin said that McCain was “evolving” and that he would soon see the light.)
Talking to a guy in the church audience whom she thinks “looks good, you red-headed Sasquatch,” she says that “people are gonna be drawn to Jesus because of the way you look.” She goes on to say that war is God’s will: I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say “war mode.” (This reminds me of that clip of Tom Cruise extolling the virtues of Scientology to an audience of rapt Scientologists.) Read all about it, and watch the creepy Pray-for-the-Pipeline video, here.
I guess it was also God’s will that this bear be slaughtered to so that Palin could lounge against a bear pelt, head and all, in her office.
I wonder if it’s God’s will that Palin’s daughter be wed to Levi Johnston, who boasts on his myspace page that “I’m a f***n redneck” and that he likes to “f***n” party and who states that he doesn’t want children. While I don’t think Palin’s daughter should be dragged through the mud, I do believe that her pregnancy highlights the desperate wrong-headedness of Palin’s abstinence-only stance on sex ed. And while the Republicans want to trot out Levi and Bristol as evidence of a good family tackling a difficult situation together, according to God’s plan and whatnot, Bristol Palin is likely the only pregnant teen in America whose child will have the benefit of a gubernatorial staff, a governor’s mansion, and sundry other high-level government perks. Most pregnant teens drop out of school (as Bristol’s betrothed has done, according to his mother) and end up raising their children in poverty.
The Republicans are hailing Palin as the soccer mom who dared to take on Washington, but the fact is she has garnered $26 million in earmarks for the town of 6500 where she was mayor. The United Stellworkers Union, which McCain mentioned so proudly in his speech about Palin, issued a very strong statement saying that McCain is not there man, and that “It is important to realize that while the governor’s husband is a member of a union, this does not automatically qualify her for an on-the-job training program to become a heartbeat away from the presidency.”
Truly terrifying.
